After some heated debate, Pleasanton Planning Commission has given the green light for Wal-Mart to open. The unanimous decision will allow the smaller grocery format of the Wal-Mart chain to move into the vacant space left behind by Nob Hills Foods on Santa Rita Road.

The shopping center, Meadow Plaza, has been plagued with the large vacancy for two years. Co-tenants in the center include To-Go’s, Mountain Mikes Pizza, Western Dental, and Tuesday Morning.

Wal-Mart signed the lease well over a year ago but has been hush-hush as they acquired other sites. The idea is that the new grocery chain could have grand opening that would not conflict with the new Safeway on Bernal Avenue and could simultaneously open its other locations. It has been announced that 13 location in total will open in California this year.

Speaking of other locations, San Ramon issued building permits for the remodel of the former Le Asia store on Alcosta  last month. The shopping center, Country Club Village located at 9100-9150 Alcosta Boulevard has had a revolving door of grocery stores in the past ten years. Originally a Ralph’s, who then subleased to Le Asia, which then Le Asia closed and has since sat vacant. Wal-Mart Grocery will be the next to take a stab at seemingly difficult location.

Although nothing has been released, one would be inclined to think Livermore might be on the radar for another location…
